Film Club is back.

Screening #7 will be this Sunday from 9:00 P.M. downstairs at

Gusto Restaurant
Vinohradska 83
Prague 2

Just a short walk down from Green Line metro stop Jiriho z Podebrad .

This week we are showing ‘The Host’, South Korea’s most successful film ever.

The talk of the 2006 Cannes International Film Festival and the latest film from critically acclaimed visionary director BONG Joon-ho, THE HOST has already garnered a substantial amount of international buzz.  Utilizing state-of-the-art special effects, courtesy of a creative partnership between Weta Workshop (King Kong, The Lord of the Rings) and The Orphanage (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Sin City), THE HOST is both a creature-feature thrill ride and a poignant human drama.

In addition we have a selection of Korean themed shorts and the latest from BOGART Films:

Kim Jong-Il bodyguard video
Propagandist videos
Team America song featuring Kim Jong Il
Flatmates
Love Meat

The ANCIENT GEEKS at P and P

Dear P and Pians:

This week we offer you an especially precocious treat as Prague’s most infamous underage writers take our stage. On Sunday, April 22, with great pleasure and admiration P and P welcomes the ANCIENT GEEKS!!

Aged just 10-13, the ANCIENT GEEKS are the most inspirational and talented young writers you’re likely ever to come across. These pint-sized poets have been writing together since September 2005 and are already seasoned performers, having given readings of their work at Shakespeare and Sons, the Petrovich Club, and at the 2006 Prague Fringe Theatre Festival. They will be returning to the Fringe this year, by popular demand, with their show CHICKENSOCKS. With poems about loneliness and love, to jellyfish and headless chickens, the ANCIENT GEEKS will make you laugh, they’ll make you cry, but most of all they’ll make you wish you could be a GEEK! With special guest appearances from rising stars the JUNIOR SHAKESPEARES - even younger than the GEEKS, and just as lovable!

”I haughtily went along thinking that the evening would certainly be “worthy,” and wound up being floored by the talent and intellect of these kids.” – Prague Post

“Astounding!” – Prague Post

The GEEKS will be followed by an open mic of poetry and music, as usual. Please note that out of respect for the young, healthy lungs of our guests, P and P will be smoke free this week.

Please also note that after this P and P only three remain, with the following featured performers:

May 13-Chris Crawford
May 27-David Rynhart (folk musician from the US)
June 17-Bethany Shaffer (please note that this is actually the third Sunday of the month-change due to wedding plans!)

Hope to see you there!!!

Prague Playhouse Actor Newsletter

—- Workshop Series: Since the success of the Prague Post Play Contest, we have been trying to figure out how to maintain momentum. In conversations with some of the finalist writers, it became clear that there was a great need for the writers to have a forum for receiving feedback. We gathered the plays we really liked from the contest but that didn’t make it into the finals, and are going to be workshoping them, one every month. The workshops will culminate in a staged reading at the Globe Bookstore. So far, we’ve identified “Celebrity Father” by Mark Moe, “Business Meeting” by Mark Corner, “Pot Bound” by Nolwenn Treguer, “Powder” by Adam Preston, “Vanishing Point” by Felix Meadowsweet, “The Sacred Sow” by Eleanor Cummins, “The Relievers” by Brandon Swanson and a play TBA by Louis Armand. There may be more to come! If you want to be involved in the workshops, either as an actor or working behind the scenes (and we will need help with publicity and other things!) please let me know via email.

—- Acting Classes. As you may know, the Prague Playhouse provides classes in the Meisner technique (http://pragueplayhouse.com/classes/acting-classes/meisner-acting-class/). The classes took a major turn for the better with the addition of a new teacher, Ben Steel. Ben is an Australian born actor and director and is very serious about the craft and teaching. With his help, the class has swelled to 13 regularly attending students and there is clearly visible progress. As the Playhouse starts producing more plays, we hope to be able to cast mostly from this dedicated pool of trained actors. The class is open to new registration and is currently free. We do, however, require a high level of dedication and will not tolerate students who are not willing to work in the class.

—- Women’s project. I hope that this doesn’t come across as sexist. In the course of working on the Play Contest, I found that most of the roles (and I think you’ll have to agree that this is true in the wider theater world as well) were for men. Several women approached me after the performances of the Contest and expressed interest in working with us but regret that there were so few opportunities. I thought it would be great to organize a project or series of projects specifically to give the women in our community a chance to stretch their acting muscles. I don’t have anything specific in mind yet, but if you are interested, please get in touch. I’d like to start meeting with key people in the next few weeks.

———

That’s about it for now. If you know of someone who would like to receive updates on what’s going on for actors in Prague, point them in the direction of www.pragueplayhouse.com. There’s a link to “Join the Prague Playhouse” in the right navigation where they can add themselves to our database.

I’m a firm believer that the more everyone shares information, the more everyone benefits. If you have something you want to share, please contact me at brian@pragueplayhouse.com.

Chris Carter at P and P

Fellow P and Pians: We know it’s Easter but in reality it isn’t celebrated until Monday so we’re still expecting all of you to come out of the woodwork this Sunday. You can even wear your bunny suits, but please, leave your pomlazkas at home.

This Sunday, April 8, P and P warmly welcomes the musical stylings of Chris Carter. Originally from San Francisco, Chris is a long time resident of Prague. He has written many songs in a variety of styles and believes that all songs have their own energy and ability to change people or a room for better or for worse. Music is a gift and is one of the driving forces of the species. Chris hopes to one day be able to write music that will in some small way contribute to the overall evolution of the art form. Chris’ current influences are the Masters from Mali, TV on the Radio, Outkast and others.

Chris will be followed by an open mic of poetry and music, as always.
