Laska is Love, Love je Laska

Update: New performances added: April 8 and 15th at 19:00!

Did you enjoy the film Once? Do you know a multicultural couple or are you part of one yourself? If you are interested in “everyday” relationships between people who, despite cultural and linguistic gulfs, find a way to understand each other and make it work, then do not miss Láska Is Love, Love je Láska by Alexander Komlosi and Eva Čechová. The next performance will be in Divadlo Na Zábradlí (Theatre on the Balustrade) on Wednesday, March 26th, 2008 at 7PM. The performance will be in Czech and English.

Láska Is Love, Love je Láska, directed by Komlosi and featuring both authors, tells the story of a young American man and a young Czech lass who meet and sparks fly.

This performance develops off last year’s successful production of “Sure Thing” at the Theatre on the Balustrade in Prague.

The new performance is inspired by “Sure Thing,” by American playwright David Ives, and is based on two original texts – “Lunch with Van Gogh” by Komlosi and “Oliver” by Čechová - developed at Professor Ivan Vyskočil’s Authors Reading seminar at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU).

Komlosi, a Czech-American who has been living in Prague for nearly ten years, has already performed versions of his text at various venues in Prague and at the One Man Show Festival in Cheb (2007). He has been invited to perform “Van Gogh” at the One Man Show Festival next year in Warsaw. Čechová, known for her authorial performance work such as Boršč, is no stranger to multicultural performance either, having worked with foreign companies like Théatre de l’Utopie.

Láska Is Love, Love je Láska is a performance bringing together various cultures and languages in an encounter which aims to foster understanding and remain understandable: “Even people who aren’t fluent in both languages can still follow the story because of the constant alternation of Czech and English. What’s more, the stories continually mesh, meld and switch, creating a linguistic and narrative verve that keeps audience members engaged,” says Komlosi, who has a long-standing experience with multicultural and polyglot performance with companies like Divadlo na voru and Doma/AtHome in addition to his own solo performance work.

Shakespeare in Scotland

Our Meisner friends at The Actor’s Temple in London have a great Spring retreat planned. Several cheap airlines fly direct from Prague to Edinburgh, so why not give it a go!

‘A profound and nurturing experience. Chesters and the surrounding area is idyllic and I feel extremely lucky to have experienced this “actor’s retreat.’
Mohammad Homouda

‘The two weeks I spent at Chesters were undoubtedly amongst the happiest of my working life to date.’ Prue Gillett

After our successful production of Chekhov’s Three Sisters at Chesters last September we are now introducing a unique week’s training at the Georgian mansion house in the Scottish Borders. Nestled in a valley alongside the River Teviot, Chesters is surrounded by hills, vast horizons and spectacular views and yet is only 1.5 hrs drive away from Edinburgh and Newcastle.

The Shakespeare Retreat is an opportunity to escape the city and dedicate an entire week to your acting and to you. Tom will demystify Shakespeare and get you acting with your whole heart – all within the peace and tranquility of the Scottish countryside.

Preparation: Specific plays and scenes will be chosen by Tom when we know the dynamic of the group attending. You will be notified of any preparation needed before the course.

Timetable: Each morning will begin with meditation, followed by 4 hours of tuition and direction; leaving plenty of time each day for relaxation and reflection.

Accommodation: All meals are provided throughout the week and you will stay at Chesters in shared accommodation.

Travel : You are responsible for organizing travel to Scotland. We suggest catching the direct train from London Kings Cross to Berwick-Upon-Tweed, flying to Newcastle or Edinburgh or driving. Return transport from Berwick-Upon-Tweed train station to Chesters is included in the course fee.

Dates: Arrival: Sunday 25th May. Departure: Friday 31st May.
Time: 10am–2pm Monday to Friday
Cost: £450 (a £225 deposit secures your place)

ONLINE TICKETS: www.prakomdiv.cz
PHONE BOOKING: 224.222.734

This is a triumphant return to Miloco’s Shakespearean roots and follows the successful European premiere and workshop production of Macbeth last summer, produced by Miloco and the Mermaid Theatre Company, at L’Espace Electrique in Prague.

Director Guy Roberts on his production of Macbeth, says, “The play is a nightmare - Macbeth’s nightmare. When Macbeth and Lady Macbeth both renounce God and their own morality and willingly embrace darkness to achieve their desires it is thrilling. The entire play is dominated by the urgency of time. So it is no accident that Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s shortest plays. The events tumble forth so quickly the audience as well as Macbeth is powerless to stop them. Macbeth tears into this play the same way he tears into enemies on the battlefield. It is a desperate, frenzied attempt to understand who exactly his enemies are and where they hide – only at his final moments does he realize the enemy is within himself.”

Playwriting Contest Winners!

Well, we at the Playhouse couldn’t be more pleased with the whole process and response to the Prague Post Playwriting Contest. We had a 40% increase in attendance over last year, we had a very good blend of final plays and the participants in the project were professional and dedicated. I would like to thank everyone who participated and everyone who attended. Your energy will help to make the contest grow and improve in the coming years.

We are proud to announce that the winner of the 2008 Playwriting Contest is Nolwenn Treguer for her play “Mrs. Svoboda and the Baobabs”. Nolwenn also won the prize for “Best Entry By a Non-Native Speaker”. Nolwenn is a great asset to Prague’s English language artist community (as well as her native French community) and we’re looking for great things from her in the years to come!

The audience award went to the “Public Relations” team. As the director of Public Relations, I can say that I really appreciate the hard work that the whole team put into making the play as good as it could be. We had very dedicated actors who really worked to bring out the humanity of the play along with the humor and Jeff Kellner was very patient with us as he watched his baby go through the ringer.

I would especially like to thank the people who helped out on the technical side to make the project as smooth as possible: Jeff (technical director), Mel (stage manager), Lara (assistant stage manager), Anna (assistant stage manager), Marketa (production coordinator) and Marie (prague post marketing manager).

For those of you that are writers, I have one thing to say to you: GET WRITING! One of the changes we’re going to make for next year is that everything is going to happen sooner. Don’t wait until October to start working on your play!  We will be having a number of events and workshops throughout the year for writers, but start now with the work!
