Job Title: Play Selection
Reports to: Artistic Director, Board
Team leader: Dramaturg
Time Required: 5 hours/week
Mission: Suggest plays for the season, vet submissions for reading series
Description:

3-5 person committee, led by company dramaturg.

The play selection committee is responsable for coming up with suggestions for the season of plays. It should solicit suggestions from the community as well as professionals as to which plays should be looked at. The committee will generate a list of plays to consider, acquire them, read them and pass on a list of suggestions to the Artistic Director and Board for final selection. Final play selection may also involve a presentation or reading of the shortlisted plays and open feedback from the active community as to which plays they would like to see produced.

Considerations:
  • Cast size 2 – 7
  • Mixed genders over the season
  • General mix of light/dark, comedy/drama, heavy/light
  • Quality writing
  • Limited production: Black box, small stage, low budget
  • Season should have something to tie it together: time period/thru-line/feel/motif/genre/etc.
  • Mostly looking at modern, well known classic plays and playwrights for the main season.
  • New plays, local authors, submissions should be part of reading series
Requirements:
  • Budget
  • Copies of plays to be read
  • Access to Dramatists and Samuel French websites

Deliverables:

  • List of plays under consideration (+ where they can be sourced)
  • List of plays which need to be purchased/shipped
  • Summary and notes (genre, cast, production considerations, etc) for each play shortlisted
Deadlines:
  • December 15: List of plays under consideration
  • February 1: Delivery of purchase requirements
  • April 1: Delivery of shortlist summaries
  • April 30: Season announced
