We are doing something a little different with this one: We are going to have a small cast of players which will function as something like a Greek chorus: They will sing 19th century christmas carols as mood/commentary on what is going on in the play. When the scenes require it, they will step out of the chorus and act all of the characters in the play (besides Scrooge). It should be fun and challenging ensemble work for actor/singers.

Ladies and gentlemen, whether you like it or not, theatre AKANDA proudly presents HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH. This groundbreaking Off-Broadway cult musical tells the story of punk rock song stylist Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock ‘n’ roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a sex-change operation gone wrong. This outrageous story is presented in the form of a rock concert and stand-up comedy routine of the blackest style. The action is moved along by Hedwig and her husband Yitzhak, a former Yugoslavian drag queen, and backed up by hard-rocking band The Angry Inch. Hedwig’s tale begins in East Berlin just before the downfall of Communism and then moves through the bleak landscapes of Midwestern America as she searches for wholeness and self-completion. Her saga finally culminates right here right now in a glam-spattered cellar in the center of Prague… easily one of the most perverse and unexpectedly beautiful stories ever told.

Under the guidance of Czech-Canadian director Mélanie Rada, an international cast of actors and musicians bring to life AKANDA’s interpretation of John Cameron Mitchell’s award-winning rock musical. Long-time Prague resident Jeff Fritz plays the title role of Hedwig opposite Uliana Elina, former frontwoman of Russian band SLOT and winner of the 2005 RAMP award for best female vocal, in the role of Yitzhak. Appearing as the Angry Inch are members of local Prague bands Broken Glass Extet and Tristram Trio lead by Ian Mikyska on guitar and Anar Yusufov on keys, with Tomáš Mika on bass and Pharoah Smeaton-Russell on drums. Production design and video projections created by Estonian artist Johanna-Mai Vihalem for the stage of Iron Curtain, a club, bar and restaurant containing numerous artifacts of the Cold War era and the memory of the dissidents who tore it all down.

The charismatic York, famous from award-winning films like Cabaret, The Three Musketeers, and Murder on the Orient Express, has performed roles in more than a hundred other films and theatrical productions, recited in numerous musical projects, and lent his sonorous voice to more than ninety audio books. In 2002 York recorded the melodrama Enoch Arden with pianist John Bell Young, with whom he also performed it successfully in several important festivals in the USA and Europe. His current collaboration with the gifted Czech pianist Libor Nováček, living for many years now in Great Britain, has been arranged specially at the request of the Strings of Autumn Festival. On Saturday 10th October there will be a workshop (adults only) from 10.30 to 4.30 called “Singing for the Truly Terrified” which is mainly intended for those who feel they would like some extra help when singing, and for those who truly believe they cannot sing. But it is also suitable for anyone who would like to come along and sing (including those who came to it last year) – we will just be taking it a little more slowly than on Sunday.

The workshop is also suitable for anyone who has to use their speaking voice at work and finds it failing them under stress or tiredness.

On Sunday 11th October we will be “Singing for Joy”, also from 10.30 to 4.30, and the workshop is open to all adults – we will be singing different songs from those learned on Saturday so attendance at both workshops is fine.

On both days we are planning a shared lunch so please bring something – not too much – to put on the table for us all to enjoy. Tea, coffee, water and biscuits will be provided throughout the day.

Those who have been before will know that space is limited at the school so early booking is highly recommended! Even if you have already signed up, please confirm your place now.

It is my pleasure to once again inform you about Andrea Small’s next
visit to the Czech Republic.

She will lead a workshop under the title “Singing for Joy” on Sunday
17th May in Ceske Budejovice.   As usual it will be held at the Materske
Centrum Maj and will run from 10.30-4.30.   The workshop is open to all adults and
teenagers, even if they believe they cannot sing.   The cost is on a sliding scale from 375kč – 700kč

We are planning a shared lunch so please bring something – not too
much – to put on the table for us all to enjoy.   Tea, coffee, water and
biscuits will be provided throughout the day.

I would be grateful if you could distribute the information about the
workshop as far and wide as possible.  Word of mouth is still the best
