Agencies
The line between actors agencies and casting agencies is fairly blurry. Most casting agencies will also have a database of actors who they can call directly. Usually, the agency that invites an actor to a casting will be that actors agent for that job. Sometimes casting agencies will not send out a brief or breakdown for their casting until they have already done a round of casting with people from their own database (thereby insuring that they have a good chance of getting their people into the job). Most agencies have no reservation about taking a fee for casting as well as taking a fee (20% is usually added to the actor’s pay which goes to the agent) as the actor’s agent. Can you say “Conflict of interest”? Like I said, this is the norm here in Prague. Most actors are “registered” at a lot of agencies in order to get invited to as many castings as possible.
There are some agencies who will insist that no matter who called you to their audition, they will represent you as your agent (and take your agent fee). If you want a different agency to actually represent you, you will need to pay them out of your own pocket. Be careful what you sign up for. Some agencies (I’ve heard this mostly about modeling agencies) will take the agent fee and then take another percentage of your fee. There is no union to police this. Welcome to the wild east!
Below are some agencies that I regularly work with, that I find are fair. I am only represented by Myrnyx Tyrnyx (a kind of quaint ode to an American sensibility for the separation between actor representation and casting director), so the other agencies I view as casting agencies. All of them (with the exception of Nancy Bishop) represent actors as well as have castings.
