Theatre Groups

One thing the Prague is full of is Czech theaters. Tell a Czech that you’re an actor and their next question is “Where do you play?” I’m not going to list Czech theatres here because I want this site to be a service to expats. If you want a good listing of Czech theatres, you can go to www.theatre.cz. That’s the Czech Theatre Institute’s page and they’ve got a lot of cool stuff going on.

In this group, I’m going to try to describe some of the English speaking groups doing theatre. Expats being what they are, people in town tend to change, so the pages might go out of date very quickly, but at least it will be a start. As always, your comments and contributions are very welcome.

    Hello,
I’m an actress and director in the United States with fifteen years experience working in the theatre. I’m also an elementary school teacher, with experience writing, directing, and teaching children’s theatre. I have an undergraduate degree in theatre, as well as further study at The National Theatre Conservatory at the Denver Center in Denver, Colorado.
Recently I was offered teaching postion in Prague. If everything works out, I will be moving to Prague in August 2007.
I was curious about the opportunities that exist for English speaking actors in Prague to find work rehearsing evenings/weekends? It is also a love of mine to organize, direct, and create projects to perform either in the theatre or in cafes or other non-traditional theatre venues. Any advice you may have for me would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks so much,
    Michelle

    Michelle,

That’s great that you’re thinking about moving out. I hope that everything works out and that we would be able to go for a coffee or something in August!

It’s definitely possible to produce things in Prague. In a way it’s much easier than in the states as it seems like there are a lot less barriers to getting a group together. There are a few things to consider, but if you’re looking at doing things in non-traditional venues, then you’re in luck here!

I’m one of the people that is getting together productions. There are others, but one of the hardest things is maintaining momentum and not getting burned out. It’d be great to have another “engine” person who’s really going to light a fire under other people’s butts.

I’d be more than happy to answer specific questions about working as an actor/director here…

Hello, my daughter and I are both actors located in LA and Seattle and we are planning a trip to Prague this summer, 2007. We would be very interested in meeting with actors in Prague and putting on plays and shooting short features on DV that we call efeatures or efilms. Any help that you could offer we be greatly appreciated, as we would love to do the same thing for Czech actors, as we recently found out we are Czech citizens, too, and will be applying for our paperwork. Thanks, Carl

    Carl,

That’s great! Hopefully we’ll have a good group of people that you can talk to at that time, or when you get here, I can give you some phone numbers of other people to talk to. How long will you be staying for?

You can certainly talk to people that are taking the acting class about working with on plays and films. As for Czech actors, I have a few contacts at Damu and other film schools that might be able to help you out. Let me know what else you need specifically as your trip gets closer and we can plan a get-together.

    Hello,

My name is Nikki and I studied abroad in Prague last spring. Now that I am about to graduate from undergrad at the University of Southern California with a degree in theatre, I am trying to quantify the possibility of moving back to Prague and work in English-language theatre, even just parttime. Any suggestions for where I should look or who I should contact?

    Thanks!

    Nikki

    Hello.
My name is Sean and I’m a Canadian director who will be shooting a music video in Prague in mid May. I will be bringing over the lead singer of the band and my cinematographer.
While in the Czech republic, myself and my DP would like to shoot a short dramatic narrative film. The budget will come out of my not so deep pocket, so it will be a bit of a low/no budget deal. Not sure if we will shoot film or video (depending if I have any deals left over from the music video). I would like to find English speaking actors as well as Czech actors to work on the project. Does anyone have any tips for finding people into working on something like this? The shoot will probably be about a day.

You can contact me at sean@seanwainsteim.com

    Thanks very much,
    Sean

    Hi Sean,

Sounds like an interesting project. I can offer people in my meisner
acting class for actors and I have a mailing list for other actors
both czech and english speaking which I can send an announcement to.

If you are looking for an actual casting director, you can contact
Maya (Myrnyx Tyrnyx Agency) at maya@ti.cz. She might be more expensive
than what you have in mind.

I also know a few people who are doing production stuff that might be
able to help with crewing the shoot.

My blog A Poetic Justice (Don’t burn the flag. Wash it!) has twelve anti-war plays in the “Theatre” page and if you are so inclined I would love some feedback and/or even be open to your group staging of any of them.

If you do not do such, and you find this solicitation in any way inconsiderate, I do apologize, it was not my intention. My intention was to offer you some anit-war plays written by an anti-war American.

    Peace.

    Hello
My name is Regina, I’m nineteen and have just finished a year in a theatre school in Sweden. I’ve been working a lot with physical theatre and would like to meet some actors to start a group in Prague this autumn, maybe for a street theatre project. It would be interesting to experiment with forms, like physical theatre, music, text, puppetry. Please contact me at regin-a@hotmail.com

I will go to Prague in August and then come back to stay later this autumn.

    Hi Regina,

You might want to contact Dan at miloco@seznam.cz. He has a group that is going to be focused mostly on physical theater and that might be more what you’re looking for.

If you’re interested in acting classes or more traditional theater, please feel free to contact me on 608 577 012!

Hi, I am currently in the process of casting two of my original plays to be performed in Prague in the new season. We are hoping to start rehearsing in August and open the shows in mid September.
I am thus in search for English speaking actors. The texts require a close to flawless knowledge of English, as the plays (especially the one text) are built on constant snappy dialogue exchange between the characters. We require strong performers with no accents for this. Is there anyway of finding them here? Please contact me on 728041425
    Cast needed: IX actress - 18 - 35 years
    2X actresses - 18 - 25 years
    2X actors - 18 - 25 years

    Thanx.
    Best wishes
    David
