True West
The Prague Playhouse Presents
In the dead of winter, the Prague Playhouse brings to life Sam Shepard’s sweltering, dark comedy TRUE WEST, which opens January 21 at 19:30 at Divadlo Inspirace in Mala Strana. Set in Southern California, TRUE WEST brings its glaring light to bear on the relationship between two brothers, the meaning of success and failure, raw nature and suburban creep. Sam Shepard is known for gritty American drama and comedy, featuring characters that are more at home on a ranch than in an office. TRUE WEST was written in 1980 and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 2000.
One of the central themes of TRUE WEST is the inevitable suburbanization of America. This is something that the director, JEFF BECK, feels is very timely for a Czech audience. The change from life in the country to life in the city is “not as dramatic as the U.S., but who knows in ten years from now? We’re starting to see suburban sprawl here already.” BECK has a degree in Theatre Arts with a speciality in Directing and has directed and acted in plays throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. He now lives in Prague.
MARK BOWEN (Prague Playwriting Contest 2008, Glengarry Glen Ross) and R. SCOTT WILLIAMS (Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll) star as the brothers Austin and Lee who must come to terms with who and what they are and what they mean to each other. ANDREA BULISOVA and FRANK MARTINEZ round out the cast as Mom and Saul Kimmer. TAMARA GINATI, currently getting her MA in design at DAMU, designed the sets and costumes. Lighting design is by MELANIE RADA and orignial music is by JEFF FRITZ.
TRUE WEST plays the 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29 of January and the 3, 4 and 5 of February. All shows are at 19:30. Divadlo Inspirace is at Malostranske namesti 13. Tickets are 220 Kc for general admission and 190 Kc for students and seniors (over 65) with valid ID. They can be purchased online at www.pragueplayhouse.com or in person at the Globe Bookstore, Pstrossova 6. The last Prague Playhouse productions have sold out, so purchasing tickets early is highly recommended.

I’m sure this will be great and I also wish I could be there to see it. I think Sam Shepard plays generally do very well in Prague
